From private compounds in remote locations to military facilities designed to withstand serious disruption, preparations for extraordinary emergencies are no longer confined to the pages of science fiction. There are financial, military and religious dimensions to this story, and they lead to some fascinating questions. But there's one aspect that deserves considerably more attention: the people who may find themselves in charge when the existing hierarchy disappears.

Japan in no country for the average Western Woman.
Kids were very unkind when I was growing up. Blubber butt, porker, lard bucket, butterball, over the quarter pounder rounder, all of which today or verboten, were names used when I was a child at school to bully those that were overweight. Kids fat shaming each other on the playground I would guess since in introduction of public schools. But Japan as a nation takes fat shaming to a whole new level and for most Western women, living in the country can be mentally scared as most notions of beauty at any size are viciously mocked in the media but also in most social interactions.
Despite being a wealthy country and access to food second to none, With Tokyo having more Michelin stared restaurants than any city in the world, why does the average Japanese woman not get fat? And why is even the American depiction of Godzilla come under fire in Japan for his perceived American shape?

The Most Effective Lie Has a Laugh Track
A peculiar thing happens when a political programme establishes who the fool, villain or villainous institution is before the audience has had much time to think. The room already knows how to respond. The host barely needs to finish the sentence. That doesn't automatically settle whether the argument is right or wrong, but it raises an interesting question about how the performance shapes the experience of watching it. I examine that question in my new video.
