I am actually on the road at the moment and missed one of the more interesting festivals in Japan: The Kanamara Matsuri or the Festival of the Steel Phallus.
However, with a bit of help from a couple of friends who went there and took footage, I was able to put together this video splicing with perhaps too much AE.
You can decide on that.
Either way, the festival is venerating the penis for its life-giving properties and started as one for those that wished to have children and for prostitutes that wanted to avoid S.T.D.s.
Of course it has degenerated since then, but the underlying message is one of celebrating life and human sexuality that produces it.
Quite different from what you would find in the West in the "current year."
