Look back at the country of four decades ago and compare it with the political, economic and cultural landscape that exists today. It is difficult to explain the difference simply by pointing to changing politicians or shifting party loyalties. Something deeper has happened. Something that affects how Americans see their country, their future and even their place within it. 
The uncomfortable question is whether the transformation can still be reversed.

There is something rather extraordinary about a generation identifying with one of the most spectacularly doomed characters in cinematic history. Anakin Skywalker was supposed to become something extraordinary. Instead, he became a cautionary tale. Yet the memes circulating around him have struck a nerve that many people seem determined not to understand. 
It is an interesting dynamic, particularly when viewed through the lens of modern generational resentment. Perhaps the resemblance is not quite as ridiculous as it first appears.
Perhaps the real mystery isn't why young men find the comparison funny. Perhaps it's why so many people find it offensive.

There is something particularly depressing about a child arriving at a Halloween doorstep only to find an empty bowl. Not because a few pieces of candy have gone missing, but because the little social ritual behind the gesture has broken down. The homeowner expected one thing. The visitor did something else. And the next child pays the price. It is a small incident, perhaps, but small incidents can sometimes reveal rather large changes.
